Why come to Fircroft College?

Diane had been working in the care sector for many years until April 2019 when she needed to take time out of work to address some challenges in her personal life. Eventually Diane was ready to get back into work and someone told her about the different courses at Fircroft that could help her get back into the job market. Diane had never had to do an interview, write a CV, use a computer or look for jobs until then and she came to Fircroft to study and get work-ready.

The benefits

Diane has bad memories of her school days but coming to Fircroft gave her a much more positive experience of education. One of the courses Diane studied at Fircroft was Understanding Dyslexia which made her realise why she had struggled with her NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Healthcare that she achieved years ago. Now that Diane has identified why she finds writing a challenge and has learned strategies to help her, she is working hard to improve and her husband has bought her a laptop to help her.

The learning

Studying the Step Up To Succeed course has prepared Diane for job seeking. With help from the tutor she has written her CV, created a portfolio of her certificates and other achievements over the years and is now able to conduct a job search on a computer. Originally Diane was unaware of what PowerPoint is but she can now create a slide presentation and has had the opportunity in class to present to her peers. Diane also practiced her interview skills and learned about what employers look for when seeking new employees.

What next?

Diane has now been offered a job. After gaining the confidence and skills to apply for work online and to prepare for and undertake interviews, Diane has already been offered a job working in the sector she loves with people suffering from dementia.

Diane feels Fircroft has helped her to regain confidence in herself and she says “If I had felt the same way that I feel now about myself after studying at Fircroft, I would have a great career in nursing by now”. We wish Diane all the best for the future.
